1. Short-term Stay
A short-term stay is a planned stay in Hungary that does not exceed 90 (ninety) days
within any 180 (one hundred eighty) day period. Non-EU citizens can enter Hungary
for such short stays under the conditions set out by the relevant European Parliament
and Council regulations.

2. Long-term Stay
A long-term stay refers to a planned stay in Hungary that exceeds 90 (ninety) days
within any 180 (one hundred eighty) day period. Such a stay is subject to specific
purposes and requires a permit. The permit is issued for a fixed period based on the
legal grounds defined by the law. Long-term residence can be limited by nationality,
population quotas, or occupational criteria. The law classifies long-term residence
permits into subcategories, the most important of which are outlined below.

3. Permanent Residence

Types of permits:

  • National Residence Card
  • EU Residence Card
  • Temporary Residence Card (a special case of intra-EU mobility)Individuals may apply for either the National Residence Card or the EU Residence The card is based on a fixed period of continuous residence in Hungary. Permanent residence status represents the highest level of residence status non-EU citizens can obtain before Hungarian citizenship, and it is granted for an indefinite period, subject to revocation.
The National Residence Card and the EU Residence Card are valid for 10 years.
Holders of these cards can obtain a Hungarian personal ID card and, upon establishing a permanent address, a plastic address card.
To apply for these permits, applicants must prove uninterrupted residence in Hungary for a specific period and provide evidence of means of subsistence, housing, and health insurance coverage. Documents proving financial means are particularly important in the evaluation process, as they are scrutinized more thoroughly than in residence permit applications.
